Young painters wanted for ‘Young at Arts’ Lighthouses on Broadway Program

Two Young at Arts painters working on a lighthouse panel

Young artists and artists of all ages are invited to participate in Phase 2 of the ‘Lighthouses on Broadway’ street-art program in a kick-off drawing and painting session next Monday at 4 p.m. at the Artists for Humanities facility at A and Second streets. In the Spring of next year … 2017 … the streets of South Boston will again be awash with lighthouses … representing colorful beacons of light to warn and guide local youth of the perils of today’s life. Paintings and other visual images created by local youth on boards shaped like lighthouses. The boards, 8 feet high and 2 feet wide will be designed and executed by teen teams. Local youths will be matched with painters from the South Boston Arts Association and advanced student members from the Artists for Humanities. The project began in 2005 as a cooperative effort between artists from the South Boston Arts Association … the South Boston Community Health Center’s Young at Arts group … and the Artists for Humanities. The goal is to have from 50 to 100 painted lighthouses ready to be bracketed to light poles along West and East Broadway and Dorchester Street for exposition during the summer and fall of 2017. Susan Rodgerson, director of Artists for Humanities, signed on immediately as she did in 2006 when the first phase of the program was executed. And once again volunteered EpiCenter studio space and their student members to pair up with youth from the Young at Arts group The program will be inserted into their regular curricular. For more information about the Young at Arts Lighthouses on Broadway street-art project contact Myra Rodriguez Howard, 617-464-7423 or Linda Doran, 617-464-7463 or Dan McCole, 617 464-4237.
