South Boston Arts Association                       Minutes of Meeting Held on Saturday, May 08, 2010

Dan McCole was presiding.

The minutes of the last meeting were voted on and accepted by the members.  Audrey Williams is ill and not here today.  Jack Canavan gave the Treasurer’s Report.  The amount of expenses was $1,112.19.  The balance of the Treasury was $4,709.87 which does not include Peter Golemme’s profit from the Sock Hop.

The Arts Affair that is in August has an advertising form in the application package. The SBAA is getting a full page ad for $100.00.  The membership is encouraged to buy an individual business card ad for $25.00.

Dan proposed the following question to the membership on should we go back to 2 meetings a month.  He felt that membership decreased 2 years ago when the SBAA stopped having meetings every two weeks.  The Board Meeting would still be every month on the 2nd week of the month.  Dan asked if there were any objections to this.  Joe Kebartas wanted to call the second Saturday meeting, which was the 4th Saturday of the month, should be called the Art Salon.  Dan hopes this help as he wants to get the spirit of the organization back.  Bill Frew pointed out that we recently tried this and the spirit died down right away.  Bill Frew pointed out that we recently tried this and the spirit died down right away.  People wanted refreshments and coffee at the meetings.

Dan talked about the current activities and how they are membership programs, community outreach programs and fundraiser (community outreach) programs.  Member programs are one such as the newsletter, the Literary Gazette, the writing group, the sketching, the museum trips, social gatherings and the poetry reading.  A proposed member activity would be to reopen a Cooperative Gallery.  The Board would need to figure out how much money that is needed to open the gallery.  For our community outreach, there are activities that include the BNN TV Show which is an arts and community show, the East Broadway Street Festival and mural painting. The Young at Arts went to New Orleans 2 weeks ago with 10 Adult Chaperones and 19 Youngsters.

They went Central City which is the poorest section of the city which was west part of New Orleans.  While there, the group painted 3 houses and 4 apartments.  The group got along well with the residents who were appreciative of the help.   Dan asked the membership for suggestions.  Joe Kebartas said that there was a meeting to be held at St Monica’s regarding the plan for the new part of Old Colony Housing with the set up of a new art center.  We should try to be part of this.  In addition, we should try to keep the Old Colony Library open as this is such a heavily used area.  Deb Putnam thought we should be painting at this art center as we need to be out in the community.   Bob Monahan talked to Dan about the Walsh Community Center.  The City is looking for ideas but the court is involved.  An Arts/Community Center doesn’t seem feasible here.

Peter Golemme reported on the fundraiser.  The Sock Hop had a full house at the event.  There were people there from Newton, Cape Cod and Medford in addition to those from South Boston.  The profit of the event was $600.00, $2,096.00 was earned and expenses were $1,496.00.  The expenses were at the bare bones.  At least,

$1,600.00 is needed.  Next year, we should try to get a grant for these monies.  Joe Kebartas was a huge help.

He ran the raffle ticket sale.   The charge for the raffle was 1 ticket for $5.00 and 3 tickets for $10.00.  Rick Winterson was lots of help and wrote a great story the week before the event.  He had many creative ideas.  At the silent auction, Debbie Putnam’s painting sold for $120.00 and Pauline Margarone’s photograph.  Joe Kebartas’ bust of George Washington was a bust.  Dotty Morris was also a great help as was Mary Dorion. The Neighborhood Associations also helped with the event.  The heads of each group bought a ticket to the event. Joe and Audrey Williams gave a framed postcard print from Joe’s shop Williams Furniture and Collectibles for a raffle item.  The problems at the event involved the sound system. Brian McCarthy was a great help and went to Radio Shack for a part.  Joe Kebartas’ Comedy Event could not be heard.  Peter also wanted to acknowledge our singers, Bill Linehan, Elizabeth Young and Barbara Trybe.  Peter Golemme wanted to send flowers 3 non-members who were a great help with the fundraiser.  They were Karen Stanley of Karen’s Boutique who obtained all the raffle items baring on, Renee Rasinski of WannaWalk (South Boston dog minding service) who obtained the raffle prize from the Lenox Hotel and Roseanne Elisseo of WeddingDanceBoston.com who led the dance demonstration.  Roseanne also helped with the publicity and promoting this event with dance networks.  Finally, Peter needed to thank the 4th woman who helped in many ways.  Mary Larkin aided with the master plan, the flier distribution and the event management.

The artists of the month were those members that brought work to show were Josie Lawrence and Dan McCole.  Josie showed her drawing and Dan showed his painting.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, May 22nd at 9:30 AM at the L Street Bathhouse.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held on Saturday, June 12th.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Boston Arts Association                       Minutes of Meeting Held on Saturday, April 10, 2010

Dan McCole was presiding.

The minutes of the last meeting were voted on and accepted by the members.  Dan McCole reported on the Treasury.  He passed out some of Jack Canavan’s report from 3/31/10.

Dotty Morris reported on the trip to Clinton, Ma, to see the Russian Icon Museum on 203 Union Street.  It was a good trip.  Dotty brought some handouts of the Russian Icon Museum and she also passed out materials to the Museum of Fine Arts.  It was noted to the members that Fran Renehan was moving to Ecuador permanently.

It was also noted that Rick Winterson had an article published in the March/April Issue of Yankee Magazine.

There was also a picture of Deb Putnam painting outside in the Thursday, March 18th, issue of the Boston Globe.  Joe Kebartas let everyone know that the librarian at the South Boston Public Library is willing to put work with artists and art for the entire year.  He himself was written up in the Tribune as the artist of the month. Rick Winterson suggested going to Peabody Essex Museum in Salem.  At an earlier meeting, Audrey Williams had suggested to Dotty Morris about going to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem.  Maureen Murphy thought we could take the ferry from Pickering Wharf as it runs in the summer.  Someone else suggested that the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, off of Sandy Pond Road would be a good trip.  It has the largest outdoor sculptor park in the state,

Deb Putnam let all know that the Massasoit is having an art show.  On our Web site there is a link for this show as well as the Marina Art Show this summer.  It should be noted that the deadline for the Massasoit is on Friday, April 16th.  The entry for the Marina Art Show has not been listed on line as yet.  There is one additional art show for the MCCA at the Boston Convention and Exhibit Site.  The application is titled “Call for Entries” and the deadline for electronic submissions is Tuesday, June 1st, with the application linked to our Website.  The dimensions being sought are 30” by 30”.

We need visibility for Monday nights.  Barbara Trybe is involved with a reading to help battered victims.  She is singing in a choir in Dorchester as well as the Roxbury Gospel Choir which is having on Sunday, May 16th, an Afternoon of Inspiration featuring Jonathan Singleton, a renowned Gospel and Jazz choral conductor, along with a mixed choir of 40 hand-picked voices.  The times are 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM.   The Margaret Gibbons Lecture is on Monday, May 17th, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  The speaker is our own SBAA President, Dan McCole.  Rick Winterson noted that the Boston Public Library and all of its branches should stay open.  We should write to the City of Boston expressing our concern.  If we allow any to be closed, we are in danger of no longer presenting the City of Boston as a world class city.  There are 3 bills on capital hill # 141 / 145 / 152.  These bills are regards to funding for the arts. Other letters should be sent in for participation in the Artist in the Arcade at City Hall Center.  This event would start on July 7th (11 to 3) until August.

.

Joanne is planning another social.  Dotty Morris thought that the writer’s could have a book fair.  The Sketching Club should go to Castle Island and sketch.  Bob Farrell is in Florida but will be back.  Writers could write outside with the sketchers.

Peter Golemme is having the Sock Hop.  It is scheduled for Saturday, April 24th, from 6:30 PM until 10:30 PM.   He needs help with the auction items, greeters at the door, people to help with collection of monies from the winners of the silent auction and people to help with cleanup.   Peter Golemme thought the raffles created a momentum problem. Raffles will have to be more tightly controlled.  A Silent Auction will definitely be held. The ticket price will be $10.00 per tickets.  He also asked Deb Putnam to put in a place for people to order tickets online.  Dotty Morris suggested that hits from the pre mid 50’s be played at the sock hop featuring artists such as Perry Como and Connie Francis.  It was suggested that a dance instructor give a demonstration of a dance and its steps.  Members could participate in the dance routines.  Deb Putnam also suggested doing a trivia contest.  Peter finished up his talk with a request to try to pack the Hall.

Dan McCole wants to meeting twice a month on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.  Fundraising is still an issue.  He also talked about visibility.  A Gallery would provide it but would need the money for rent.  Dan also updated the group on the SoBACC progress.  James Callanan is making the $25,000.00 grant.  John Norton whom is a non affiliated artist made a suggestion regarding creating a coffee house in South Boston.

The artist of the month was Yves Rigaud.  He is an art student who is graduating next month with a degree in art from Salem State College.  His paintings were oils and were very bright and colorful.  They were made from a technique that used an advanced microscope to study insects minutely.  Then he painted these insects greatly enlarged showing their beauty and majesty through their intricacy.  Yves used oils and the pictures were bright and colorful.   He studied bees as well as butterflies.  Without these insects there would be no crops or flowers.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, May 8th at 9:30 AM at the L Street Bathhouse.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Boston Arts Association    Minutes of Meeting Held on Saturday, March 6, 2010

Dan McCole was presiding.

There was not a SBAA Board Meeting this week as the date was changed prior to the scheduled meeting time.

Dan McCole continued with the regular meeting which was attended by around 15 to 18 of our members.  He started off the question put to the group as to what would energize the SBAA.  The organization has started off big and then it drifted off.  He wanted ideas as to how to instill energy into the organization.  He thought that we should reach out to others and the community.  Maureen Murphy said that without the gallery there is no center point for the SBAA in the lower end.

Dotty Morris suggested the wares of our group be presented every third month after the meeting’s artist of the month presentation.  She stated that then we have a table of our goods to be sold for about an hour.  She also thought that we should talk up the organization.  We should get young people to join.  She has talked to her niece and nephew.  She also thought that we need more advertising and she offered to do the articles.  She also felt that publicity should be done earlier.

Mary Dorion took Dotty’s idea one step further.  She felt that we could have a table with note cards and other work every month that is already priced.   She felt that this should low key as it is the meeting of a non profit.  The South Boston community is different from the one that existed when the organization started.

Deb Putnam said that persistence is good.  It rewards people.  We should try getting an ad or meeting announcement in the real estate journal which goes out weekly or in the Boston City Paper.  These ads or announcements should encourage people who are shy to share their work.  Harold Cunniff is always doing this.

Dan McCole announced that the parade is a go.  A Super Tour Bus is being used for the parade.  The bus has room for banners and paintings.  Rick Winterson needs fellow walkers to lead the bus.  Harold made something out of the Book of Kells which was out of paper mache.

Mary thought that maybe we could get talented kids involved.  Dan thought that this was a good way of reaching out.

Deb Putnam felt that there needed to be more professional development.  We need to meet with other skilled artists.  We lose people when we are stretched too this.  She herself does not want to lose the focus and her art.   Mary Dorion is talking about reaching out to talented people who want to break in to the business but don’t know how.  She felt that this aspect of the business of art should be explored as people deserved a try.  It was here that South End Galleries and Fort Point were mentioned.  We don’t have any specifics regarding galleries in the South End and there is a concentration of art specifics in Fort Point.

Dan McCole turned the meeting to give an update of the progress of the SoBACC Group.  Jim Callanan wants a theater as part of the community center.  This is stipulated in his grant of $25,000.00.  He also wants to be involved in the design.  Dan and the rest of the SoBACC Group have talked to the stage hand union.  In case, the Station 6 police station doesn’t work out, another location will be sought out.   For the RFP, the group wants to have at least $50,000.00 to $100,000.00 in grant monies.

At L Street, a large show the entire length of the Curley Center is being planned.  This is to reaffirm SBAA’s presence in the community.

The ticket price has not yet been announced.  Dotty Morris suggested that hits from the pre mid 50’s be played at the sock hop featuring artists such as Perry Como.

.

Joanne is planning another social.  Dotty Morris thought that the writer’s could have a book fair.  At an earlier meeting, Audrey Williams had suggested to Dotty Morris about going to the Peabody Endicott Museum in Salem.  Maureen Murphy thought we could take the ferry from Pickering Wharf as it runs in the summer.

The Sketching Club should go to Castle Island and sketch.  Bob Farrell is in Florida but will be back.  Writers should write outside with the sketchers.

It was suggested that a dance instructor give a demonstration of a dance and its steps.  Members could participate in the dance routines.  Deb Putnam also suggested doing a trivia contest.

Dotty Morris introduced a potential new member.  Robert Morris asked about SoBACC, the Strand and the Tribune.

The L Street Art Fair in front of the Curley Center (aka the L Street Bathhouse) will help to reinvigorate the SBAA as it will get the most viewers.

Deb Putnam is working on her paintings.  She doesn’t go much outdoors in the wintertime.  She showed what she was currently working on.  Individual conversations proceeded from there as the meeting winded down.

Arthur of Propoint offering the Gazette a good price.  Overall the creation of each new Gazette is plodding work.

Events as of 01/09/10

  • Poetry Reading on Saturday, January 16th (snow date January 13th) at the SBPL from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM.

The artist of the month was Judy West who is one of our members and a fine photographer.  She shared her pictures with us of her trip to Mongolia, the Gobi desert, the apartment housing in the north and the ”gers” used by the nomadic tribes to live in.  During her trip, she rode camels which were lovely to ride for the miles used.

From 1200-1226, Genghis Khan was the ruler.  It was mostly a Buddhist colony before the Russians came.  The Russians killed many monks and destroyed temples.  It is democratic now.  The Russians put in electricity but this is in the cities such as Ulaanbaatar.  The main industry of the country is yak wool.  There is suffering due to the fact that there is not enough yak wool for the large population vs. the small yak herd size.  Yak wool produces fine wool clothing such as “Gobi” high quality cashmere sweaters, clothing, and blankets.  Gobi is the name of the corporation that manufactures these goods.

In the nomadic society, the people live off of their animals for milk, food, and clothing.  They live in “gers” which are portable lattice work structures covered in felt or canvas.  The language is Mongolian.  A bit of modern technology is seen here as horsemen use cell phones.

Girls go to school but the boys become workers.  The population is around 3 million people who live mostly in the city in the apartment housing that has electricity and central heating.  In the desert, there has been some excavating that has uncovered dinosaur bones from 100 million years ago.  Coal has been mined as this is the fuel for the central heating but it causes high pollution.

Sports are mostly manly, but women can become contortionists who are popular.  For the man, sports include horse racing and wrestling.  Boys are as young as 7 when they start to ride, and, often bareback or barefoot, they learn the skills to race well.  Wrestling is very popular as well.

Judy’s photos conveyed a sense of this land and its people.  Her trip was truly a great experience.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 9:30 AM at the L Street Bathhouse.

A Social Get Together Party was held on Monday, December 7th, at the South Boston Public Library.  Peter Golemme and Richard Coit played piano at the event and refreshments were provided.  Joanne Miller received for funding the Social Get Together and everyone enjoyed the event.

The West Broadway Stroll on Thursday, December 3rd, also went well.  The weather was unseasonably warm.  Starting in April, there will be monthly strolls with the day to be selected such as the first Thursday of each month.

Dan McCole had a parade discussion with the group assembled.  The vote was no to using the $500 electric car.  One person suggested that we have a truck with people dressed as green paint cans.  The Parade Committee will meet on Tuesday, January 5th, and Thursday, January 7th.

The Young at Arts/Open Windows Project is still participating in beautifying West Broadway.   Right now the goal is to get the vacant windows done for the Parade

Paskalis, 59C TL-463 US Air Force which was a picture of his first plane.  He also had some large paintings from Colorado.  Bill Frew also showed us some prints and painting of a private beach club in the Hamptons.  The pictures from Colorado were wonderful.  With all of the glorious photos taken, Bill can paint more from Colorado.

Pei was a designer of the Portland Museum.  The group all took the tour of the museum.  On Sundays, there is a jazz brunch.  Dotty is planning a second trip in May but she needs to have at least 8 people.  The museum is easy and relaxing.  It includes a tour of a refurbished house.  Also there is a tour of Longfellow’s house.

Norman Crump is opening a new gallery in the former recruiting office for the National Guard.  It is in the same group of stores as the Java House on East Broadway.  There will be a stroll on West Broadway on Wednesday, December 3rd.  In April, strolls are scheduled for the first Friday of the month. Dan McCole, Norman Crump and Robert Farrell will be participating.  One member suggested that poetry be combined with art as it is a slow time for poetry books.  Pauline Margarone, Marilyn Reisberg and Nancy Santry are all entered in the Abigail Adams event sponsored by the Quincy Historical Society and the Quincy Art Association.

Audrey Williams offered to get the membership list from Bill Frew in Colorado for Joanne Miller and Lorna Allen.  Dotty Morris’s interview was printed in the Boston Seniority for November.  Audrey Williams will scan the article and send it to the membership when she has an opportunity.  Dotty also wrote up her trip to Scotland for the paper.

Dan McCole with SoBACC is competing against Donna Brown and Reverend Burs Stanfield who have the funding for their project (Veteran’s Housing – Families and Vetrans in Transition).  Their funding is dependent on the veterans in transition.  However, the support services needed for these veterans are not present in the neighborhood,  The next meeting for SoBACC is on Monday, November 16th.  The next steps are to meet with the mayor.

At the South Boston Street Festival held on Saturday, September 19th, Lorna Allen did well as did Deb Putnam.   The Poetry Reading which was held the week before on Saturday, September 12th, did well also.  Dotty Morris and Susan Mahan decided that this should be held twice a year in the good weather.  Good things were said about the event.  Deb Putnam also participated in the Quincy Art Festival which was held on Saturday, September 19th, and Sunday, September 20th.  Since she submitted her application in time, she was a participant in the juried show and won a prize.  Dan McCole and Pauline Margarone had work entered in the festival but missed the application deadline for judging.  At the SoWa Open Studios, Maureen Murphy sold some greeting cards.  She is also donating a painting.  Josie Lawrence almost had a sale but, since she did not bring the piece in question, she lost out on this sale and didn’t get the buyer’s name.

The Artist of the Month was Robert Farrell.  He grew up in South Boston.  He wasn’t an artist but, then, he went to Hawaii wanting to learn to paint.  He came back to do art and teach kids.  He became disillusioned with the public school system.  He enjoys going out and sketching.  He has a bag that holds his supplies but also serves as a stool.  He always has a pad of paper that he sketches in with pen and ink.  If there is time, it becomes a watercolor.  This is something that he has to do.  He just has to get up and sketch.  His goals are to join and be good enough for the New England Watercolor Society and then from there be good enough for the Nationals.  Presently he belongs to the Cape Cod Watercolor Society.  He uses watercolor pencils.  He has twelve pieces of work at the South Boston Public Library during the month of October.  His website is robertfarrellart.com.  He was creative when he was younger using clothespins as his creative materials.  He especially thinks that having a Sketching Club is a good idea.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, November 14th, at 9:30 AM at the L Street Bathhouse.

Dave McCole presided for the rest of the meeting.

Pauline Margarone ran the election and the Board members were re-elected.  These 5 members included Dan McCole, Jane Crump, Bill Frew, Paul Conley and Audrey Williams.  Their tenure is until June 2011.  The other 4 members of the Board (Harry Brett, Jack Canavan, Susan Mahan and Dorothy Morris) will need to be re-elected on June 2010 as that is when their two year tenure is up.  Considering that some of the Board members were either not running or wanted to drop off the Board, at the Board Meeting the new officers were elected.  There were 100% of paid members at the meeting so the quorum percentage was met.  Pauline Margarone turned over the gavel to Dan McCole.  At the members meeting, Pauline was again thanked for her tenure as President of the SBAA.

The minutes for June’s meeting were approved by the membership.  Jack Canavan gave the Treasurer’s Report.  As of June 30, 2009, there was a balance of $5,559.77.  This represented net income of $1,442.49 and the final balance included the $1,500.00 Grant which was restricted for the newsletter.  His report was accepted by the membership.

Dan McCole talked to the membership about SoBACC (South Boston Arts and Cultural Center).  At the meeting at the Condon on June 3rd, Jack Hart ran the meeting on the 2 proposals.  There were about 250 people who showed up.  Most of those in attendance were for the Community Center.  Since that meeting, Jack Hart was able to get an extension of 120 days in addition to the 90 days for submission of the RFP.

Dan McCole also talked about the separate account for SoBACC that would funnel funds under the SBAA umbrella and would not affect the SBAA accounting.

Dotty Morris wanted to restart the Poetry Readings at the South Boston Public Library.  The first date is scheduled for Saturday, September 12th, from 1:30 PM until 3:30 PM.  There is no rain date.  A time limit will be set for each reading to 5 minutes.  Dotty will need help in setting up and taking down the chairs.  The Library wants to have fliers to help advertise the event.  Dotty will send out an email on the event.  Refreshments will be provided.

Dotty is also planning a group trip to Portland to see the museum up there.  Details for the trip will need to be determined.  The date is set for Saturday, October 17th, with a rain date set for October 24th.  Everyone will take the bus early in the morning.  The group would have an early lunch in the café of the Portland Museum after checking that museum in the AM.  Then after lunch, the group would check out smaller museums and art galleries.  She would send out an email on the trip details.

Deb Putnam spoke on the South Boston Street Fair that is scheduled for Saturday, September 19th, as it is being handled differently this year.  The SBAA needs to pay $35.00 but it will not cover all the artists as there will only be the one table for the organization.  All individual artists will need to pay $25.00 for their space.  The list of SBAA members who have already signed up include Judy West, Deb Putnam, Norman Crump, Dan McCole, Pauline Margarone, Mary Dorion, Joe Kebartas, Ann Marie Norton, Joanne Miller and Lorna Allen.

Paul Conley mentioned that the writer’s night would be on Wednesday, August 5th, at 7:00 PM at 29 Farragut Road in Jerry Baldner’s office.  The Newsletter is being worked on.  If you have submissions, send your writing to Carol Masshardt at carolhardt@comcast.net and artwork to Ann Marie Norton at amnorton1@verizon.net.

Richard Coit wanted everyone to know about a networking site called Neighbors to Neighbors.  Something about this will be sent out to the membership.

Harold Cunniff has a paper mache piece entered in the fluff festival.  Pauline Margarone had been traveling going to Paris and to Amsterdam where she visited the Anne Frank House.  She took over 400 photos of her trip.  She was on Nantucket last weekend.  In the meantime, she is trying to start a portrait business.  Lorna Allen has been working on her jewelry.  She is going to school and is working on a website as well as attempting to have jewelry-making parties for children.

It was mentioned that Facebook is a good source for networking.  A discussion of the Internet should be talked about at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, August 8th, at 9:30 AM at the L Street Bathhouse.

There was some discussion about recruiting new members at the next Station 6 Meeting.  Some felt that this was not a good idea.  The focus should be on the proposal for the South Boston Arts and Community Center.

On Thursday, July 16th, the South Boston Public Library (SBPL) is having its annual Art Festival with Bobby Dunlap providing the music.  Deb Putnam also mentioned that there is an Art Market in Boston at the corner of Washington and Summer streets.  It is a place for artists to show their work.  There is a wide variety of work being shown.  There is a link on Deb Putnam’s website (www.dputnamart.com).

South Boston Arts Association

Minutes of Meeting Held on Saturday, March 14, 2009

Dorothy Morris was presiding.

The minutes for February’s meeting were approved by the membership.

Dotty Morris presented Dan McCole.  Dan McCole and Dave Connolly are on a committee to promote an Arts and Community Center for the old police station at D & Athens Street.  This committee includes Dan, Norman Crump, Rich and Edie Adams, Dave Connolly and Brian Mahoney.  There will be an Open Meeting at the Condon School on Wednesday, March 25th, at 6:30 PM.  The organizations in the South Boston community such as the Arts Association, the Historical Society and its archives, the Actor’s Workshop, the Firefly Players, the Citizen’s Association and the Sports Hall of Fame and its Museum need a home. Jim Callanan who gave another $25,000.00 for an arts scholarship has also offered another $25,000.00 towards a theater.  Dan wants to have petitions signed and also wants to have a letter to go to the powers that be.

Dotty Morris also reported to the members that the preparations for the Parade are all set.  We are carrying the banner in front and will be followed by Eleanor, the MIT’s Green Car.  In the rear, there will be a duck boat carrying the group from Young at Arts.  Pauline Margarone noted that the Parade starts on Broadway and Dorchester streets.

The next discussion was on the “Arts in the Park”.   Its date is moving from June to Sunday, August 16th.  In June, there will be a juried art show with a submission fee.  Dan McCole will talk to Sue Rogerson about using the Artists for Humanity Building on A and West Second.

Dotty Morris turned the talk to the Museum Tours.  On Thursday, March 19th, from 5:30 PM until 9:00 PM, she is planning a trip to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.  The admission price is $12.00.  If you join as a member, $10.00 is applied to the membership fee.  A tour of the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) is tentatively scheduled for two dates in April

Fran Renehan is in a play at the Vokes Theatre on Route 20 in Wayland titled the “Cripple in Inishmaan”.  The dates of the play are April 30th to May 16th, 2009.  Rick Winterson is going in an upcoming play.  He will be in the “Men of Tortugas” at the Apollinaire Theatre which is part of the Chelsea Theatre Works located on 189 Winnisimmet Street in Chelsea from April 17th to May 17th.  Times and ticket price haves not been announced as yet.

Dotty also mentioned that she is trying to organize Poetry Readings/Open Mike at the South Boston Public Library.  She also reported that Writer’s Night on the first Wednesday is still a good night and the group has been joined by Joe Kebartas.  The next meeting is on Wednesday, April 1st, at 7:00 PM in the Farragut Office Building.  Dotty mentioned that she has a piece in the 20th Issue of the Literary Gazette.

Audrey Williams reported to the group that Jack Canavan had reported to the Board that the balance in the Treasury as of March 13th, 2009, was $4,288.79.  Dan McCole reported that Mt. Washington had come through again with funds for the Parade.  He will be receiving a check from Jack Forbush on Monday, March 16th.

Pauline Margarone was the Artist of the Month.  She talked about making cards from hers and your photographs.  She stated that Red River had nice paper and it was only $12.00 for each box of 50.  This means that the cost of the card is $1.00 which you can sell for $3.00.  There is a clear plastic box that can be purchased to sell your cards to advantage.  Making a book costs a few more dollars and needs more creative marketing.  Pauline had used publishers.com.  Their costs were $25.00 and the books would cost $35.00 per book.  She also made a DVD with Music of her book.  If she made a lot of these DVDs, she might be able to market these more easily.

Minutes of Meeting Held on Saturday, February 14, 2009

Pauline Margarone was presiding.

The minutes for December’s and January’s meeting were approved by the membership.

Pauline started the meeting with a discussion on the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.  In keeping with the green theme, MIT’s Solar Electric Vehicle Team will bring their solar powered vehicle, “Eleanor”, to the parade and it will be our entry in the parade.  There was a discussion on whether or not to put the vehicle on a flatbed but this was voted against.  Members were asked to consider marching in the parade beside the vehicle or in front holding the banner for the SBAA.

In the meantime, on Friday, February 27th, there will be a reception in the Center of Lobby 13 at 3:00 PM to mark the introduction of “Eleanor”.  Our group could take a tour beforehand of the MIT Campus.  Rick Winterson will arrange it.  On Parade Day, Pauline will dress in green and Jane Crump suggested dressing in recycled materials.  The Fort Point Channel Theater Group, carrying their own banner, would like to march with us.  At the meeting, Pauline asked who might march in our own group.  Thus far, in addition to Pauline, Rick,

Harold Cunniff and Susan Mahan have volunteered.

The next discussion was on the “Arts in the Park”.  Pauline wants better signage for the Sunday, June 28th event with a banner across  Broadway at I Street and, on the day of the event, sandwich boards around the exhibit inviting people to come on over.

Dan McCole was up next to speak.  He had been to a meeting regarding the old police station at D and Athens Street behind the gas station and across from Burger King.  The South Boston Neighborhood Corporation (SBNDC) wants to create housing for veterans – 30 apartments for families and 15 for transitional veterans.  Dan emphasized that even though others including our group would want the space for other purposes such as an Art Center / Community Center, we should not appear as being against veterans.  Plans were not brought out and discussed.  It was hoped by many that this community center could house the South Boston Historical Museum, the South Boston Sports Museum, workshop rooms for teaching, a Gallery, a small store selling products of South Boston, a screen to show films and a place for visual arts.  He added that Natick has a great community center.  There are two garage bays plus the main entrance to the police station.  There is about 24,000 square feet to work with.  He can envision a stage, a kitchen, bathrooms and handicap access.  A center would need permanent staffing.

This Community Center would require a large financial input (millions of dollars).  Grants would be needed.

This should be coalesced with the other groups.  We should check with the 2 theater groups in South Boston – the Actors Playhouse (George McDonough) and the Firefly Players (Mike Barrett).  At the next meeting, the community needs to be there.  This would include the South Boston Citizens Association (SBCA).  Bottom line, this building has always been in service to South Boston only.  This is not a done deal with the SBNDC.  We should try to provide another argument (non acrimonious) at the next meeting.

Carol Masshardt stated that the High School at South Boston is looking for volunteers to teach art to the children.  There is grant money that can be obtained. Rick Winterson argued that it is important that volunteers do step up because children need arts, languages and sports.  Jane Crump stated that Arts are not entertainment.  Some children are different from the others as their thinking is from the right brain as opposed to the left.  Arts help these children over this hurdle. The Arts also promote all types of creative thinking.

Rick Winterson is going to be in two upcoming plays.  The first engagement is at the Fine Arts Museum on the 2nd floor of the Egyptian exhibition.  The play, “Evening at Giza” was scheduled for the February vacation week at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  Later on, he will be in the Men of Tortugas at the Appollonaire in Chelsea from April 17th to May 17th.  Times and ticket price haves not been announced as yet.

Upcoming Events as of 2/14/09

  • Writer’s Night will be on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009.  The location is at 29 Farragut Road which is the Farragut Office Building at Jerry Baldner’s office of Suite E.

Dan Connolly was the featured artist of the month.  He is multi-talented as he is a writer, a poet, a singer, and author as well as being one of the editors of the South Boston Literary Gazette.  He was also a former vice-president of the SBAA.  He talked about a book on war experiences that was being put together from the experiences of various soldiers.  There are 9 different sections that have gone through at least 3 rounds of editing and polishing.  He read to us from some of these sections.

The first section that he used was entitled “Food”.  The first reading was his own experience in Vietnam as was the other reading.  Both of them fully conveyed the hardships that were faced.  Another reading in “Food” was from Patrick who had Iranian parents and was about Iraq.  The last reading was another one from Dave on his experience in Viet Nam and was in the “Surroundings” section.  He talked about Viet Nam from his point of view and what he had seen.  The idea behind this is that it might be an effective therapy for post traumatic shock victims.   The results would be published and would help us understand about the horror of war as well as the horrendous conditions that the soldiers had to deal with.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, March 14, at 9:30 AM at the L Street Bathhouse

Due to the forecast the ICA musuem trip is going
to be postponed until further notice..
.(contact Dotty Morris if interested.

Writer's Night is moving this month from the first Wednesday,
February 4th, to the next evening Thursday, February 5th.
The start time remains at 7:00 PM and the location is
still the same one which is the Farragut Office Building at 29 Farragut Street.  There is a parking lot there.

This Saturday, February 7th, there is good news.  At the South Boston Public Library beginning at 1:00 PM, the 20th Issue of the Literary Gazette (a South Boston Publication) will be presented to the public for the first time.  Prizes will be given for the best poem and the best prose.  Authors included in the issue will be reading their work.
